Diet sodas can make you fat?? Do you believe this new study?!


Question: Some huge new study involving thousands of people and also lab rats says that drinking only one 12-ounce can per day of diet soda can make you gain significant weight, even though there are no calories !
How can this be? They claim that the sweet taste triggers your body's metabolism somehow and tricks it into making fat. I think this is a lie, and there will be a new patented product to come out of this now that apsertame is off patent. Behind the scenes shennanigins, worth billions of dollars !!

The study does not claim that diet soda makes you fat. That's just what the press decided to hype about.

The study was not randomized. People weren't assigned to drink different beverages. They were looking at people who chose to drink diet soda, so they are already self-selected as people who are concerned about their weight.

If you read page 2 of this link, the researchers explicitly say that the study does NOT suggest that diet soda causes obesity, and offer a number of explanations as to why the diet soda drinkers were more likely to be people with weight problems. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/1...

I don't believe these studies - especially with rats.

using less sugar helps you lose weight.

Everything is moderation is ok.

I don't buy it. Our body relies on so many enzymes and machinery that is shape specific to molecules. The body does not "think", it reacts, so I think it's unlikely. However you never know..
I would think that people who drink diet sodas might take advantage of those saved calories and buy an extra candy bar or something.

People who drink some thing that is diet generally dont want to exercise and generally because its diet they think they are doing some thing great for them selves as if drinking 23 diet sodas = running a 23 mile marrathon.

who knows whats in those artificial sweeteners or how it affects people

show me a thin person whos suckin down a diet soda and if they are they're not thinking it makes up for the triple meatloaf they had.

Case in point fat people drink diet drinks. I dont have to prove it I look around and see it everywhere even before the study came out.

im not too sure i saw that too on yahoo... but, i wonder i mean bc for the longest time i drank regular sodas and then i quit and started drinking diet and i lost a few pounds i have no idea what to believe lol.

Any canned food and drink contains a lot of calories. Not surprising to me.

Too much of anything is bad. Just because foods are now low-fat, Sugar-Free, 0-trans- fat, low sodium and diet people automatically assume"hey this is healthy" but it does'nt really matter when you are eating 3 and four courses.

No what they say is that people drink diet sodas and think they are being so good with their diet, so then they will splurge on something else. Like someone will have a diet soda with dinner instead of regular, and will think "Oh since i had diet soda instead of regular, i get a treat!" and then they eat a fattening dessert. That keeps up and there they are gaining weight.

i definately believe it!! all those chemicals, perservatives, fake sugars are all harmful to your body!!! it causes you to store fat bc your body does not know how to digest it.

I believe it, just because "diet" soda does not mean it is good for you. It has other things besides calories! :)
