A good fruit smoothie that contains carbohydrates AS WELL as protein and fiber. Most energy drinks just have carbohydrates (in the form of SUGAR or HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, which are both very unhealthy). However, if you make a good fruit smoothie, your carbohydrates will come from the natural sugars present in the fruit, which is far more superior than sugar or HFCS. Plus, the fruit will supply you with a natural source of vitamins and minerals, which is more readily absorbed by the body than the synthetic stuff they put in energy drinks. Therefore, drinking a fruit smoothie will provide you with more nutrition than an energy drink.

Also, I suggest that you make your fruit smoothie with whole milk or yogurt, because you need some protein and fat to keep you feeling satiated as well as energized. If you have too little of either of the three macronutrients (carbs, protein, and fat) you will not feel as energized. Plus, protein and fat is absorbed slowly into the bloodstream, so you get a steady supply of energy. But an energy drink, which only consists of carbs, will give you a sudden rush of energy that eventually disappears before you want it too! It does not have a lasting effect because all you did was give your body simple carbs.

So if I were you, I would make a fruit and yogurt smoothie. Plus, it tastes delicious!

Egg white protein smoothie made with 1/3 C egg white protein powder 1/4 Cup cold water, 1/4 C milk or soy milk, 1/2 C plain yogurt, 2 T cocoa, 1T flax meal, 1/2 banana

protein, carbohydrate, fiber... all you need to start the day.
