substitute with flavored water first, and work your way down to normal water. Or what you could do is drink more natural sodas first,(there are less additives) like an Izzy, work down to flavored water, then water. ( you can get them in the natural section of Fred Meyers, Trader Joe's, and just any place that sells natural stuff.)
Also if you're worried about your heath, absolutely STAY AWAY from diet sodas. those are worse, because the fake sugars they use for it just makes you crave more sugar, so in the long run, it just makes you fatter.
My bro has the same problem too, but he won't do anything about it..

You get a jolt from Pepsi. It's a combination of caffeine and sugar that peps you up.

The best way to kick the habit is to stop drinking sodas all together. If, as you say, you've been drinking 1 liter or more per day, the lack of caffeine may give you a headache for a day or two. Your body will also miss the extra calories you get from the sugar. That might make you hungry. Listen to your stomach and eat when it's empty, not when you feel like it. Eat slowly and stop when you aren't hungry anymore. That will keep you from gaining weight while you're quitting.

Caffeine and sugar is an addiction. So your body will protest its lack for a couple of days. After that, it will be simply a matter of starting the habit of drinking water or some other non-caffeinated, sugar free drink when your friends drink soda.

I would suggest staying away from the decaffeinated, sugar free drinks. When your body tastes the sweet, studies show that it expects that rush of calories that come from sugar.

Remember that you're fighting an addiction. Try to stay on the wagon. But if you fall off and have a Pepsi, just stop drinking them again.

Good luck.

When I started drinking milk and 100% fruit juice, I was surprised at how little I wanted soda. I'm 27, 275 lbs and I exercise 30 minutes a day. The food guide pyramid says I'm supposed to eat about 2.5 fruits/day (1 cup 100% fruit juice counts as 1) and 3 milk group items per day (1 cup milk = 1). I end up drinking 1 cup of juice and 2 cups of milk total every day. I'm rarely thirsty, and if I drink a glass of water. The water isn't boring because I rarely have to do it.

With a liter a day, I would be addicted, so I would take baby steps. Switch to 100% fruit juice.

If you are very dependent on the caffeine content, you may want to gradually reduce the amount you drink. Otherwise you will likely get unpleasant caffeine withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, anxiousness, difficulty concentrating, insomnia and irritability. If you drink coffee or other caffeine sources, you probably don't need to worry about any withdrawal symptoms.

A friend of mine had a terrible soda habit and withdrew from the caffeine first by mixing caffeine-free and regular soda, daily reducing the amount of regular soda in the mixture. The next step was to switch to other flavored drinks as was earlier recommended. Don't be fooled into switching to fruit juices as a "healthy" alternative--most are loaded with sugar and have lost most of the fruit's nutrients. Some, such as Izzy, are better than others; check the labeling and avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague.

Good luck!

I loved Pepsi too. I found that the Blue Sky Brand cherry drink vanilla creme and berry creme etc.. seem to be a close match to the tastebuds. Also Hansens Brand is good .
