As a past competitive swimmer, I ate powdered glucose constantly between races to regain energy. I haven't found a drink yet that matches it. You can also get it in tablet form and chew it. Your body converts it rapidly into energy (providing your are physically exerting yourself). Obviously you should have fluid intake, but I would be careful of some of the drinks (such as Redbull), as they make your heart race which has a negative effect. As your heart rate increases with your physical exertion you don't want to pump it up with anything else at all, as this will tire you quicker. i.e. the quicker your heart races the quicker your energy is drained.

Dont eat this stuff at any other time, as glucose is a less harmful form of sugar so to speak (glucose is what makes fruit sweet) and it is only that you are converting it instantly to energy with the physical activity that makes it an acceptable practise in this instance.

Hope this helps.
