What's the best way to store whole coffee beans?!


Question: Sometimes they come in a bag. Well, when I open the bag, I usually wrap it tight and put a rubber band around it and just set it aside (away from light, not that it will penetrate the bag) but I say to myself, there's got to be a bettter way..

Could it be those zip lock storage containers? those disposable ones, or glass jars, or something? Thanks for answering.

In the original bag or in batches you will use within a week. Put that into one of those zip locks that you can remove the air with a little hand vacuum device and then store in the freezer. Do not store in the fridge. The enemy here is moisture mostly.

I think you want to keep out as much air and light as possible, I use the freezer even though I've read it doesn't do any good.

It's best to keep it away from light and heat. I buy a couple of pounds at once and keep most of it in a freezer bag in my freezer. I keep a few days' supply in a ziplock bag in a dark cupboard, though, so that I'm not pulling the bag out of the freezer too often.

Constantly slightly-thawing and refreezing things can lead to the creation of excess moisture, which will worsen flavor and shelflife, but as long as the coffee is well frozen, it seems to keep its full flavor for a couple of months. Once out of the freezer, full flavor only seems to last a couple of weeks, even in a ziplock bag. If the coffee isn't at least sealed up in a ziplock, it starts to lose flavor within a couple of days, especially if it's ground.

The best way to ensure fresh coffee is to buy it whole bean and grind it yourself, and to buy frequently, rather than storing it a long time. The biggest coffee snobs I know buy only a week's supply at a time, but that isn't practical for me, which is why I use the freezer.

Get a good airtight cannister. In my house, we use a Zevro self serve bought at Target, but not the one designed for coffee, as it only holds ground. I do not like the freezer it is bad for the oils in the beans. In my former life, before I moved out of the vacinity of Whole Foods, I used to drink Illy. It was sold in these marvelous little steel cannisters. I still use my empties for storing coffee that I buy from a local roaster.

freeze them

I am going to contradict just about everyone but the freezer is actually not a good place to store your coffee. As stated by others, the enemies of coffee are light, moisture, time and air. By putting your coffee in the freezer you are exposing it to moisture. Really, one of the better things to do is either keep it in its original bag and put it inside a ziplock bag, pulling out as much air as possible (as one person stated) and sticking it in a cupboard or getting a sealed canister (not a clear one) and putting your coffee in there. Really, though, try what you want and whatever you think keeps your coffee tasting fresh, do that!
