Cities are banning bottled water... do you think this is right?!

Question: Articles were released recently about pharmaceuticals being found in tap water. Now another city is banning bottled water. I mean... it wouldn't be so bad if they said "lets ban bottled water that's from X source because it's causing environmental damage". But they're just outright banning water in a bottle... your thoughts?

I think that if they are going to ban bottled water then they need to expand the treatment and cleaning of regular water-because ours here taste awful and in some places that experienced drought it was muddy. Also, I have tried to find a local recycling center that accepts plastic products but haven't found one. I believe that if they would create more areas to drop of recycle good then it wouldn't be such a problem. Also, I don't think that they are thinking of long term affects, like when areas go a whole entire summer without rain and the only sources of water are bottled, I don't think it will come to a complete ban, but I also think they should extend the cleaning.

THEY ARE DOING IT BECAUSE THE BOTTLES ARE FILLING UP THE LANDFILLS they should put a deposit on the bottles like beer and soda

This is justified only because people "as every other species" are greedy. We throw away water bottles that we can easily re-use for years but this plastic waste is causing problems and must be rid with. But I do think we should get rid of something less necessary like plastic candy wrappers and replace them with tinfoil.

If we recycled the bottles it would be much better.

If it's a legitimate health issue, then ban the water. If not, then there is no reason to ban the water. It's that simple.

well, it seems to be that the bottles used in bottled water contain toxins that eventually leak overtime into the beverage. it is wise to ban them, maybe not carry them. but to prevent citizens from using them is a different story. i am for the banning of plastic bottles, because of the harm it can cause.

I live in NV and the water is very hard, I grew up on well water with a water softener in FL, I cannot drink tap water here I literally throw up everytime I do. So for me I would have to say I will be looking into this I would like to know what your source is for this report.

most cities are banning bottled water that the city purchases for it employees. It is being banned due to cost to the city budget.

i agree. if you look on any given construction site what do you see?a friken million plastic bottles everywhere

I think this is silly!! I live near San Francisco and the city has rampant crime, dirty streets, and a homeless problem that will not go away. And bottled water is the highest priority in San Francisco?!?!?! Figure that out!

Why are we wasting our time on something this stupid? Oh yeah, did they mention that a local Pharmaceutical company was dumping chemicals into our water supply? What are our officials here thinking?

The bad tap water article quite likely is some PR smear by angry bottled water companies who are having their products banned from cities like San Franscisco and Seattle.

Bottled water bans are not right--and I believe there are some Constitutional lines crossed. Legitimate merchants should NOT be banned from selling their products because the elected officials in the city can't profit from their sales or because merchant sales of a better safer product adversely affect competeting city revenues.

It's evident greed and $$$$ are REALLY behind these bottled water bans: the mayors in SF and Seattle want juicier lobbyist payoffs from bottled water than they're currently getting. Either you pay up---or we ban your product.

Then again: maybe botteld water ISN'T so much a victim. What if this "ban" may be a ruse to jack up bottled water prices---where the juicy profits are split 50/50 between them and city mayors??? Think about it: I don't see bottled water companies putting THAT much of a fight here.

It's not that far a stretch: Look how well the plan worked w/ the anti-smoking / tobacco lawsuit deal. Lawyers, lobbyists and tobacco magnates all got rich---while smokers not only pay....but are herded out restaurants, bars and forced to smoke outside in some pretty rough places.

America the Beautiful, isn't it?
