Why won't coke offer a sugar-sweetened variety? Even if it costs more to buy.?!

Question: As someone originally from a country where our soft drinks are sweetened with cane sugar I have been very unhappy with the "High Fructose Corn Syrup" versions available here in the US.

I was overjoyed last week to discover the availability at this time of the year of Jewish "Passover Coke" that's made to the original recipe. I got ten 2L bottles of the stuff and it's just like the Coke from home - so much cleaner, cripser and it doesn't leave you with that syrupy, "still thirsty" feel in your mouth.

I did a bit of research and discovered press releases from Coke claiming that the two tastes are indistinguishable - an out and out lie.

My question: - as there seems to be a demand for soft drinks flavoured with cane sugar, and the mechanism to produce them is still available (as evidenced by passover coke), why does Coke and other bottlers not offer a sugar sweetened variety? I know corn syrup is much cheaper, but I for one would gladly pay 3 times as much to get REAL coke. Would you?

I wouldn't be surprised if they are looking into doing that. Not just for the taste, but in response to the increasing public concern over the effects of too much high fructose corn syrup.

I'm sure they've done some serious consideration and market research.

I'm sure you could find lots of stuff online---Jones soda is made with cane sugar though, and you can find that at your local convienence store, or even walmart.

they make it its called jones

If you are looking for a cane sugar sweetened cola, try Boylan's Cola. I have tried it and it is pretty good, but I'm more used to the Coca Cola.

I have found it at Cost Plus World Markets. You might want to try there, if you have one in your area. Other gourmet type markets might carry it as well. It is probably closer to what you are looking for. Good Luck.
