so why do they bother?
Answers: They must spend billions each year on advertising, so why when you go to a pub and ask for a coke they say 'we have pepsi is that ok?' and you answer yeah whatever.

Each establishment is paid by either company to sell the product in most cases.
you have to say ok because thats all they have to offer, pepsi will be better tasting that the tap water they will serve you.
I dont go to Pubs. I dont ask for Coke. I dont really drink Pepsi. If you have a problem with the coke and pepsi call the company or something.

It has been my experience that coke drinkers don't seem to care as long as they get the carbonation. I am a die hard Pepsi drinker. If I go out to eat and ask for a Pepsi and they tell me all they have is coke, I drink unsweetened iced tea or water. I will not put a coke into my mouth for any reason.
I suppose it's more to do with what you would buy at the supermarket.
In a pub, you don't really get much choice. Everyone has their preference, but will settle for either if they have to.
There were experiments done a while ago that said it's just the advertising that we react to. We can't actually determine between the two. A person was shown images of the advertising with each one whilst drinking each one and their brain activity was measured. If the person was watching the commercial of say pepsi and that's what they prefered, their brain activity was high. But if they were watching a coke commercial, it was lower. But it didn't matter what drink they were drinking.

Two cold drinks, very popular, well advertised ..... however, when u ask for one or the other, and the one u want is not available, YOU decide to take it or leave it. Coke and Pepsi are two very different drinks. Outlets sometimes run out of stock and have to try to offer something else to keep the client but the client don't have to make do with a different drink because his choice is not available.

Having worked as a (medium sized) supermarket manager I know this:
The two are in intense competition and employ various marketing methods to attract business, one of the things they do is to offer to outlets free drinks coolers together with a certain once off amount of cases for free (around 30 cases of 24 cans which when sold could net ￡720) to get them as their clients. They must agree not to stock competitors' products in them at least for a certain period of time. So an outlet that accepts the deal becomes a new customer.
Of course also these coolers have their logos on, which means a kind of free advertising for them.
We played the system well by having coolers and the free cases from both companies. It gives customers more choice too.
Its a legal requirement - a stupid one though.
If you ask for coke, and they give you pepsi without telling you its pepsi its some kind of trading standards violation.
