Question: Espresso: Steaming vs Frothing milk on Hamilton Beach 40729!?
I bought a cheap espresso machine:
http://www!.amazon!.com/Hamilton-Beach-407!.!.!.

It has a frothing nozzle for steaming/frothing milk, but I don't know the exact difference between the two!. I meant I know how to froth the milk, but not how to steam it!.

Anyone familiar with this machine!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I am a retired barista, and I couldn't find the difference between the two, but I assume since it's a dial, frothing is steaming with a low amount of steam, whereas steaming is at full blast!. (I've found that you can make a lot thicker foam using the lower levels)!.

I don't have your device in front of me, so I don't know the difference exactly (it could be the opposite, with frothing as the highest setting)!. However I found a good trick was to add a little ice to the top of the milk and then use the highest setting!. You get better foam when you foam cold milk and the ice keeps the milk cold for a little while longer!. You want to continually be moving the milk around the wand, with the wand almost coming completely out of the milk (you'll know because of the hissing sound it makes) but remember to dip the wand back in the milk to heat the milk!. It's an art and I'm having trouble explaining it here!.

You do get more bubbles with a higher level of steam, but it also has a lot to do with how far out of the milk you take the steam wand (smaller the bubbles means thicker foam)Www@FoodAQ@Com
