Question: Is it true that soft drinks dehydrate the body!?
I like diet soda but I don't want to drink it anymore if it dehydrates because I already sweat a lot from working out and don't want negative side effects!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Caffeine, not sugar or carbonation, is the ingredient that dehydrates us!. It takes more water to process caffeine than a caffeinated beverage contains!. So since it uses more water than in the soda it does dehydrate!.

Not all sodas have caffeine though!. Rootbeer, Ginger Ale, and the lemon lime drinks (sprite and 7 up) do not!. Mountain Dew actully has more caffeine than regular sodas!. Basically if it does not say caffein free then it will have approximately 35 - 50 mg of caffeine per serving!.

As long as you are properly hydrated then a single soda a day won't hurt you!. We need 1 ounce for every 2 pounds of body weight and 8 more ounces for every 20 minutes of exercise!. With hot/dry days and climates even more is needed!. Yes we do get some water from food and other drinks!. But alcohol and caffeine do not count as water intake since they both dehydrate!.

Just have an extra glass of water if you have a soda!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No!.!.!.!.most Americans do a good job of keeping themselves hydrated throughout the day — without keeping track of water consumption!. Even better news: Other beverages — including caffeinated ones, like coffee and diet soda — can help you meet your fluid needs, according to the IOM!. Low-fat and fat-free milk are other South Beach Diet?-friendly beverages that can help you meet your fluid requirements!. Foods that contain a lot of water, such as vegetables and fruits, also countWww@FoodAQ@Com
