What is a soda? (as seen on American Television)!

Question: What is a soda!? (as seen on American Television)
I live in Europe but watch lots of series and movies in the original English Audio!. I once or twice now saw scenes where the characters wanted to drink something and ordered or bought a soda!.
I looked it up and found its any kind of soft drink!. So are the guys in the movies not saying the brand because of the copyright issue or is there also THE soda!?
What will I get if I'd order a soda!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
There is not soda called soda!. If you ordered a soda you would most likely get a coke or pepsi!. But most places would ask you to be more specific!. Some people would call it pop instead of soda!. It depends on where you live in America or Canada!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The others are right if you are talking about modern movies and television!. However, if you are referring to old movies and classic television based in the 40's and 50's a "soda" was a drink made at a "Soda Fountain" in a "Soda Shop"!. It consisted of a scoop of (usually Vanilla) ice cream in a tall "Soda" glass, drizzled with flavored syrup like chocolate, strawberry, cherry, etc!. Club soda (carbonated water) was then "Jetted" into the mixture to create a creamy, foamy drink called a "Soda"!.

Soda is a term that can reference any carbonated drink!. It has carbonated water, sugar, and flavoring!. Depending on the type of soda it can have coloring and caffeine in it too!.

Soda does not refer to a specific brand!. To use a brand in TV or in the Movies they often will have to pay for the name for specific purposes or they may not use a name brand because no company paid for advertising for their program!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

if u ordered a soda, the waitress would most likely ask u what type (coke, sprite, ginger ale, etc!.) because a soda is not a brand its just a bubbly/fizzy drink (noted a "soft drink" because it has the same consistency as water - as compared to like syrup!.!.!.) but there are many varieties/brands!.!.!. Soda is water with flavored syrup!.

The Water and flavored syrup is then blown with CO2/carbon dioxide to get its bubbly fizz texture with makes it have a better taste!.
