Cola zero is the real coca-cola, same recipe, but no sugar!. Diet cola is a completely different recipe, made to taste SIMILAR to Cola!. also, Cola Zero uses some extra sweetener!. Both are sugar free, and *supposedly* with no calories!.

One (Coke Zero) is geared towards the male market (lad's ads) and the other, Diet, is geared towards women!. The word "Diet" is not very manly, so they came up with "Zero" for men on diets but ashamed to admit it!. And, suprisingly, as an ad campaign, they work!

I think diet coke was typically seen as a girls drink for the purpose of dieting!.
They wanted to market it as a drink that a man could pick up and still feel "macho" so they created coke zero!.

I beleive the artificial sweetner is different!.
