I drank antifreeze 10 months ago?!

Question: I drank antifreeze 10 months ago!?
In a semi-suicide attempt which failed!. I drank about 8mL of it!. The only thing I immediately noticed was a partial deafness in one ear!. I'm curious if any chronic effects might develop later because of it (ie shortened kidney/liver life)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
You may have some chronic effects, especially if you consumed an ethylene glycol based anti-freeze, versus if you consumed a propylene glycol based anti-freeze!. Large amounts of ethylene glycol can damage the kidneys, nervous system, lungs and heart according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC)!.

While propylene glycol isn't good for you, it's in the "pet safe" anti-freezes, and in a lot of other household products, like deodorant, moisturizers and hand sanitizers!. The FDA actually has propylene glycol classified in the "generally recognized as safe" category!.

If you're interested in more information, check out the toxic substance information from the CDC!. The FAQ talks in depth about how health is affected by both of these chemicals!.

My best recommendation would be to check with your doctor though!.
