Answers:
As opposed to liquor - which is a hard drink!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A soft drink is a beverage that does not contain alcohol!. Carbonated soft drinks are commonly known as soda, soda pop, pop, coke or tonic (northeastern USA) in the United States, coke or pop in Canada, fizzy drinks in the United Kingdom and Australia and sometimes minerals in Ireland!. The name "soft drink" specifies a lack of alcohol by way of contrast to the term "hard drink"!. The term "drink", while nominally neutral, sometimes carries connotations of alcoholic content!. Beverages like colas, flavored water, sparkling water, iced tea, lemonade, squash, and fruit punch are among the most common types of soft drinks, while hot chocolate, hot tea, coffee, milk, tap water, juice and milkshakes do not fall into this classification!. Many carbonated soft drinks are optionally available in versions sweetened with sugars or with non-caloric sweeteners!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As flavored carbonated beverages gained popularity, manufacturers struggled to find an appropriate name for the drinks!. Some suggested "marble water," "syrup water," and "aerated water!." The most appealing name, however, was "soft drink," adapted in the hopes that soft drinks would ultimately supplant the "hard liquor" market!. Although the idea never stuck, the term soft drink did!.

Personally lots of things dont make sense in this world for example:
(con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress!?Sorry i just thought this was funny)Www@FoodAQ@Com

It could be any one of a number of reasons!.

1!. Spirits or alcohol is referred to as 'hard licquor' so I guess in comparison, sprite, coke etc are soft!.

2!. The acid and sugar in 'soft' drinks can erode or melt your teeth, thus making them soft!.

3!. In Ireland, non drinkers are considered soft so I suppose soft non drinkers drink soft non alcoholic drinks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A hard drink is referred to anything with alcohol in it!. There for soda/pop is a soft drink because it doesn't contain alcohol!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

"soft" only because it is vs!. Hard (which means liquor)

This is a very old beverage retailing term from the 1920s (Prohibition Years) and the term/label of soft-drinks has simply stuck!. (Although "hooch" and "23-skidoo", from those days!.!.!.not so much!.) Now the VERY ironic thing, is that another "soft" drink -- Coca Cola -- actually had cocaine in it, which wasn't illegal then (imagine that) therefore it's name "coca" before they caught-up with & changed that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
