A glue can be made from milk by souring it using vinegar (an acid) which separates it into curds and whey. The curds can be neutralised by various bases to produce a variety of different glues. The glue can be tested for strength by sticking together two lolly sticks and attaching weights to them.
Sodium bicarbonate is used to neutralize any acid remaining from the vinegar. Watch for bubbles of gas to appear. Add a little more sodium bicarbonate until no more bubbles appear.
Making one glue takes about 15 mins
1. Place about 125 ml of skim milk in a 250 ml beaker.
2. Add about 25 ml (approximately 1 ounce) of vinegar, which is an acidic solution. The vinegar will coagulate the milk protein casein.
3. Gently heat the milk and stir constantly until small lumps begin to form. The small lumps form when the coagulated casein begins to precipitate.
4. Remove the beaker from the heat and continue to stir until no more lumps form.
5. Allow the lumps (curds) to settle.
6. Filter the curds from the liquid (whey) by using filter paper and a funnel.
7. Gently press the filter paper around the curds to squeeze out the excess liquid through the filter paper. Dry the curds at room temperature for several hours.
8. Return the solid material to the empty beaker.
9. Add about 30 ml (approximately 1 ounce) of water to the solid and stir.
10. Add about 1?2 tsp of sodium bicarbonate to neutralize any acid remaining from the vinegar. Watch for bubbles of gas to appear. Add a little more sodium bicarbonate until no more bubbles appear.
11. The substance in the beaker is glue. Test the adhesive properties of the product with various
materials.
