Packets of instant green tea like the ones you describe taste horrible because they contain inferior quality tea. If it tastes bad, it's probably really low quality.

Do yourself a favor...buy some high-quality loose-leaf green tea. Good green tea, properly brewed, tastes REALLY GOOD. Yes, it's a little work to get into learning how to brew loose-leaf tea, but believe me, it is worth it. Green tea is really diverse: you can get Chinese and Japanese green teas, or other kinds too. There are kinds that are strong, mild, ones that are grassy, ones that are sweet, ones that are crisp and bitter. There's something for everyone.

I run a tea website which has a lot of information on different varieties of green tea, as well as reviews from different users (including mine, I'm Alex Zorach if you want to read my reviews).

Here are the listings of green tea:

Now, you mention weight loss. Will green tea help you lose weight? It definitely won't hurt. And it might help a little bit. But it's not going to help a huge amount, even if you drink a lot of it. Green tea has been really over-hyped as a weight loss product. I also wrote an article on this topic, based on the research I found: http://ratetea.net/topic/tea-and-weight-… - but besides the weight loss, tea has other health benefits so you may want to drink it. Oh, and black tea, white tea, and oolong tea are also quite healthy...if you like the way they taste better, drink them instead. There's not much evidence that green tea is any healthier: they're all healthy.

Basically, I'd say, keep drinking green tea but by all means, get some really good tea. If you shop around you can find 4 ounces or 100-125 grams of tea (enough for 30-40 cups) for under $5, and if you're willing to spend a little more you can start getting into some really top-quality teas that taste amazing. Try small samples from different companies to figure out what you like!

Good luck!

Truvia or Splenda, maybe a little skim or 2% milk, and/or experiment with different food flavorings (vanilla, almond, hazelnut; whatever you have in the cupboard).

Do not under any circumstances add milk!!
If you want to keep it healthy, add a drop of natural sweetener like honey or some lemon juice!

Green tea drinker :)
