Easiest way to do it is to buy carbonated water and make some kind of syrup. But stirring may take out the carbonation. There is a product called Sodastream that helps you make it, but I've never tried it. Check out these links to see if they help you get ideas on how to do what you wanna do..

You might prefer that last one, but I thought I'd share the different methods.
Seriously, don't spend a fortune. Go to http://www.sodamaker.biz/diy.php where U can C how to build your own VERY EFFECTIVE home soda maker carbonation tool for under $10. Or you can go straight to http://www.sodamaker.biz and buy one for under thirty bucks.
Now that you're done with that. Go to Sam's Club 'n buy most any kind of soda syrup that you grew up on and loved. Coca Cola Classic, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Cheerwine, Mtn. Dew, Sprite, Fanta Orange, A&W Root Beer - all those syrups can be bought somewhere. Your own local beverage distributor warehouse somewhere nearby perhaps, is a good source. Generally, you can buy soda syrup for LESS than the restaurants pay for it. They pay a premium price that covers rental and maintenance costs on the beverage equipment furnished by the local beverage distributor who delivers their consumables (sometimes including the co2 bottled gas). Or, you can make your own - recipes abound on the internet. Or, you can buy direct from fine companies like http://www.pittsburghsodapop.com/.
Adding syrup to bottled seltzer water that you buy at the store is NOT recommended. Neither is spending $100 - $300 on a SodaStream (nothing more than an expensive toy - eye candy only). Your kids will LOVE making their own fizzy water carbonation creations. Check out this YouTube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIjdo7UnWmg

No, making soda requires expensive equipment to add carbonation. Without the co2 equipment you would be making kool-aid or punch.
Seltzer water or soda water and corn syrup, as much or less as you like. Just test it multiple times as you slowly add the syrup. Get some grenadine for a cherry soda...
