Coffee novice. Do I want a French Press?!
Do I want a french press? Would I have to get an exceptional grinder just to use it?
Answers:
I have a French Press and have zero problems with gritty coffee. Any tiny grounds sink to the bottom anyway. I use a cheap spin grinder that does leave some dust that has never been a problem.
Always purchase premium coffee ie. Starbucks or even Trader Joe's if you're near a good store - they're worth it.
For everyday use I use a plastic filter cone that use paper cone filters that eliminate all grounds and dust. They 're the cheapest, last years and years and are the BEST way I find for making one cup at a time - all I need ::

fantadragon is wrong - it's recommended that coffee be ground coarsely for a FP - not 'extremely fine' because of the small particle thing!
.
People are attracted to French presses because of the meaty fouthfeel they provide. This thickness is not necessarily caused by the quality of the grinder, but rather the fact that coffee must be ground extremely fine for a French press and this sometimes allows for little coffe particles to pass through the mesh filter. If you're looking for something quick in the morning a French pres might not be the best way to go, as they require more hands-on than a regular coffee maker.
