It tastes like dried leaves soaked in water. 8^) It has just a little sharpness, almost like coffee, but weaker and milder. It's good with lemon or milk. You can put sugar in it or, better, a little honey. It can be smokey (lapsang souchong), or floral (jasmine or darjeeling) or perfumey (earl grey). English Breakfast tea is a little sharper, to wake you up in the morning. But they all taste like tea. 8^)
What is a good tasting tea is a matter of taste. I like lapsang souchong, but lots of people don't. Any good coffee store (I mean where they sell coffee beans) has tea, usually by the ounce, and it's usually pretty good. Tea from different regions, made by different processes, tastes different. So you need to taste a lot of different kinds and develop a taste for it and see what you like, almost like wine.
Black tea taste can be sweet, bitter, earthy, malty, peppery, smoky, spicy, floral...well you get the idea.
Now, black tea flavor depends on what variety you are brewing from.
This tea type comes from 3 main countries. They are India (the largest producer), Sri Lanka, and China. There are others as well, but we'll stick with the most common.
The Assam varieties are smooth rich and malty. The Assam "tippy" teas are even sweeter and make a great afternoon or morning tea that goes well with sweet foods.
Darjeeling teas which are known as the "champange of tea" are really a black tea (or tea for that matter) in its own class. The taste is very good...sweet and spicy with a cool aftertaste. The aroma is delightful and the brew light green. Definitely a tea every loose leaf tea drinker should experience.
Ceylon tea from Sri Lanka is also a very good tasting tea. Sometimes blended with Assam varieties to make types like "Irish Breakfast", this tea produces a dark red liquor that is bold, full-bodied, and earthy in taste. A splash of milk changes the texture and is the perfect replacement for folks looking for a break from coffee.
Black tea taste can also be strong, bitter, and smoky too as you can find out with the Chinese varieties such as Keemun, Yunnan, and Lapsang souchong.
They sound like they may take some getting used to as some are traditionally smoked and infused with oil.
The only way to extract the best black tea flavor is to brew it from the whole loose leaves and avoid buying tea bags. Infusing tea is fun and is the best way to obtain the most it has to offer.

and each of them has a very unique taste. Plus the popular ones have many varieties, e.g. Keemun, if you google it, you'll find tons of sub-types of this tea.
Personally I happened to like Taiwanese ones (they are relatively rare and hard to find though). I like them for very tender, soft and deep tastes which IMHO other red teas lack, they are too harsh and strong for my taste.
PS. If you are looking for a tea to buy, the only way to find the tea you like is to methodically try them one at a time :) So far my experiments show that when it comes to tea, people's tastes are completely random and unpredictable.
