ID required for energy drinks?!

Question: ID required for energy drinks?
I was in Tracy, California today, and I was in a gas station trying to buy a Absolute Zero Monster along with some skittles. When I went to buy it, the clerk asked me for a ID. At first I thought he was joking, but he was serious. The manager came out and told me I needed a ID for it. I didn't ask why, but I sure wish I did.

Any reason why he asked me?

Some places are over-cautious and don't want anyone under 18 drinking something that's dangerous for your health.

Because drinking too much energy drink can be bad for your heart (it speeds it up), so I guess they want you to be old enough to understand that... That's a bit odd, though. In that case, ID should be needed for just about anything. I mean, coke isn't very good for you, either.

Try finding a healthier alternative to gain energy. You should be thanking the store for trying to add a few more years onto your lifespan.

What? That's beyond weird. I've been buying energy drinks since I was 10. Never been asked for ID.
