I suspect the raw eggs in the UK are probably the same as those in the US. We ALWAYS have to be very careful with anything using raw eggs as there is the possibility of salmonella poisoning. I don't think raw eggs are considered safe anywhere. We just have to be careful when using recipes that call for raw eggs. Made properly, the mixture for eggnog is heated slowly to 160 degrees, and then cooled.. so the eggs really aren't raw. The commercial product (at least in the US), is pasturized, making it safe to consume.

Eggnog was actually derived from an English drink called "posset" or "spiced milk". So you may well have it in your markets... just not called "eggnog".

Here's an interesting article... to dispel salmonella fears.

Try this no egg eggnog recipe... it's not exactly the same as traditional eggnog, but it's pretty close...
?1 pkg instant vanilla pudding
?1 1/2 quarts milk
?2 1/2 tsp rum extract
?1/2 tsp nutmeg
Preparation:
Blend pudding mix and 2 cups of milk, following directions on pudding package. Chill for 5 minutes. Add the rum and nutmeg, then mix in the rest of the milk. Chill and serve.

Understand, US raw eggs aren't safe either. Commercial eggnog is always pasteurized and they sell pasteurized eggs here. Rest of the people are just taking chances.

Anyhow, eggnog often has a vanilla or tapioca flavor to it (maybe spiced up with Cinnamon or nutmeg). It is served both chilled or hot, but small servings as it's quite filling. Consistency I'd say is a drinkable jello pudding or thickened milk shake. (Silky smooth though)

It has a sweet creamy taste. Where i live there is several companys that put it out in the stores around this time of the year. I haven t found one that i didnt like. You can also find recipes to make your own.

I tried the egg nog Starbucks in London last year when Christmas shopping - staff were standing outside giving free samples. I was straight in the door - it's divine! Try it!
