Can I make my own coconut water by mixing canned coconut milk with water?!

Question: Can I make my own coconut water by mixing canned coconut milk with water?
I can't believe I haven't seen a single discussion on this issue.

Coconut milk is EXPENSIVE, mostly I believe because it is a fad. I can't afford to buy all those individual bottles and it is a horribly time consuming job to purchase my own coconut, chop it up, press it, etc. So I'm trying to come up with an alternative method, of which there usually is to heavily marketed high priced food items. I have canned coconut milk and was thinking of mixing it with water (cold? boiled?) to essentially make my own coconut water. My purpose for wanting this is because I am training for a 10K and then a half then full marathon, so I don't want to loose all the benefits (but maybe some.) Has anyone tried this? Can this be done?

Answers:

Coconut milk and coconut water are two completely different things. Coconut milk is made by steeping shredded coconut and coconut water is the liquid inside a coconut.

Also, where are you buying coconut milk that it is expensive? I go to Asian supermarkets and get it for like a dollar a can.

Here is 24 cans of coconut milk for $30 at amazon, with free shipping

hope this helps
