If everything was clean when you started, it would remain safe to drink for a long time. That doesn't necessarily mean you would want to drink it. After a few days, it would start to taste plasticy because of the action of the chlorine in the water on the polyphenols in the plastic. After a few weeks, it would take on a green tinge and start to taste revolting although it would still be harmless.
It is not safe to fill plastic bottles with tap water - the chlorine in the water leaches chemicals from the plastic. If you do it overnight and taste the water in the morning you will be able to taste the plastic. That's why it says on the bottle not to refill it.
Almost indefinitely, u see the chemicals you see in bottled water is due to the filtration and is not a preseritive. Tap water has similar chemicals in it already. And plain distiller water will never go bad. (assuming u do not grow alge in it)
Strange message about not storing water in bottles, why are drinking water bottles sold?
I'm pretty sure if the cap was on tight enough the water would always be safe to drink.
Probobly not long if you opened it.
