Sorry, but I have to disagree with the other answerer. I'm pretty sure the difference between the chocolate milk you are preparing at home and the one you drink in restaurants is the brand of syrup. Most restaurants use Fox's U-bet Chocolate syrup and it tastes very different from Hershey's or any of the powdered chocolate mixes, like nestles or ovaltine. Fox's U-bet chocolate syrup is sold in most supermarkets and has been around since 1895. For a picture of the syrup check out this website.

If your in the USA and the restaurant serves your chocolate milk in a glass, they are generally mixing it on the spot using real milk and probably Fox's U-bet chocolate syrup.

Probably just a different brand. Honestly, most restaurants buy things in bulk. If it were to be homemade, all you have to do is put milk in a pan on low heat and add chocolate (shaved melts fastest). Keep stirring until it's all mixed in (don't let it scorch). Then let it cool.
Interesting Fact: Powdered seaweed is added to most manufactured chocolate milks to keep the chocolate from separating from the milk.

They use a premixed liquid milk that they just pour into the cooler. Most likely it is something from Hersheys or Nestles.
Buy it at the market, it usually doesn't cost any more than white milk.
They make it with whole milk and Hershey's syrup. I think I'll go make some right now.
