Because it contains tannins, the same thing that can make wine dry or can make iced tea bitter. Tannins are in the outer skins of cranberries. They're very high in antioxidants. Try Cran-Apple or Cran-Cherry for less cottonmouth.
Cranberry juice for some does not create the "parched mouth" affect. However, there are a combination of ingredients in commercial cranberry juice which can cause one to feel as though they have a dried mouth or thirstier.

First, the pure cranberry juice extracted contains chemicals which can make one's mouth feel dry. One is called Proanthocyanidins or Tannins.

Another ingredient which causes one to feel thirsty or have a dry mouth is the amount of fructose in the juice, basically sugar. When one eats sugar or other sweet things, they typically feel thirsty.

The citric acid and other preservatives which keep the juice fresh for longer periods of time may also create a feeling of parchness in one's mouth.
