what happens to the ice crystals when you add them to the water?!


Question: What happens to the ice crystals when you add them to the water?
I think they start to dissolve but...I am not sure could you please tell me?

they cool the water around them, and at the same time, they dissolve, until the temperature of the liquid is stable



Well, depending on the temperature of the surrounding water...if it's warmer than the ice crystals, then energy in the form of heat will transfer from the surrounding water molecules to the ice crystals. The ice crystals now have gained heat energy, and slowly the ice crystals dissolve as their hydrogen bonds are broken by the heat energy that is gained from the surrounding water.



They melt, not dissolve.

As they are made of water, when put into warmer water, the ice will 'unfreeze' an turn back to liquid - ie. Water.
