Soy, like many foods, is beneficial if eaten in moderation, but if over-eaten, can cause problems. There are several compounds in soy which are known to lower LDL cholesterol, reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men / breast cancer in women, and help with menopause. Some studies show that just one serving a day of soy foods contributes to a reduction in cancer risk. In Chinese Medicine, the soybean is known to have a cooling thermal nature; it strengthens the spleen-pancreas; moistens dryness; cleanses the blood vessels and heart, improves circulation, promotes clear vision and lowers fever. On the flip side, soy contains phytoestrogens, similar to human estrogen. Women with estrogen-positive (ER+) breast tumors and breast cancer should avoid eating soy because these tumors are stimulated by estrogen.
So, what to believe?
The problem lies in the fact that the bulk of the soybeans used to make Soy products have been grown in a manner which is beneficial to the profit margins of the farmers not to the health of the consumer. And the manner in which the product is processed is such that it's as cheap as possible... again to be beneficial to the profit margins of the processors. So, avoid the more processed products, such as soy isolates and powders. Choose whole, organic soybean products, which have been naturally fermented or sprouted, such as miso, tempeh, tamari or soybean sprouts. Fermentation is the key (and with most other beans, nuts and grains) as it neutralizes many of the bad things in soy... but try to find soy milk made from fermented soybeans!!!
Have you tried almond or rice milk?
