Well they didnt have stores to just go and buy a gallon of milk at. Most people milked the cow whenever they wanted milk so that it wouldnt spoil.

Some people had ice houses where there was blocks and blocks of pure ice to keep things cold and frozen.

Or they dug holes in the ground because the earth is cooler than the air around and this would keep the milk from spoiling.

Another option was if they had a creek or river (which most people had because they needed water) they could keep the milk down next to or secured in the river to keep it chilled.

They would just milk the cow right before they drank it or if they needed to store it they would put it in a closed tin can or bucket and put it in a cold stream or river.
