The controversy started in 1992 when Pepsi announced that holders of "349" crowns were the winners in its daily "Number Fever" promo for May 25, 1992. But it was discovered that Pepsi distributed more than 800,000 caps with the number 349.

The softdrink giant refused to recognize the winning caps, saying it would only award the prize to holders of Pepsi bottle caps containing a pre-determined winning security code. It said there were 500,000 non-winning 349 crowns.

In 1994, Del Fierro organized Coalition 349, claiming a membership of 20,000, which filed a $400-million class suit against Pepsi in New York, but the court said the case fell under Philippine jurisdiction.
