Should the latch above the kettle on my Mr. Coffee maker be up or down?!

Should the latch above the kettle on my Mr. Coffee maker be up or down?

There is a plastic latch that can be left hanging behind the kettle or can be snapped up above the kettle. I want to know what position it should be in when I turn the coffee maker on to brew. I have used the coffee maker once and I had the latch down that time. It leaked onto the bottom plate but I don't know if that is because the latch should be up or not. I don't want to just try it because I'm afraid I will break the coffee maker. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I wish I could post a picture of it.
