What is stem cell research?!
What is stem cell research?
Answers:
Stem cells are cells that haven't developed yet, so they can become other types of cells. They can be taken from adults, umbilical cords, or (and here's the controversial part) embryos. The thing is, the cells from embryos can become any type of cell in the entire body, but when taken from umbilical cords and adults, they can only become certain kinds (I think blood cells). Scientists want to use the embryonic stem cells to help stop diseases caused by damaged cells. Another aspect of stem cell research is nuclear transfer. It's when the nucleus of any cell, let's say a blood cell, is injected into an egg. The egg begins to multiply, as though it were an embryo (BUT IT'S NOT AND WOULD BE EXTREMELY UNETHICAL TO ALLOW IT TO GROW). Stem cells can be harvested from that as well.

I've done alot of research on this type of...research.
Not sure why this question is in Non-Alcoholic Drinks section? but any whoo heres your answer :-)
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells which have the unique potential to produce any kind of cell in the body and self-renewal capacity. Medical researchers believe stem cells have the potential to change the face of human disease by being used to repair specific tissues or to grow organs.
They use the blood and cells from the baby umbilical cord which has the unique ability to become any type of human cell, and can be used to replace or become any type of organ or human cell. It's complicated and the research is very promising in a lot of areas such as Parkinson's disease and cancers and paralysis. That is why the debate is so heated. The only way they can retrieve the cells is from babies and that means some people approve of using aborted fetuses for this purpose, to speed up the research. Others are opposed.
