Why do soda ingredients always say (to protect taste)?
I'm looking at my soda, and it seems to have Potassium Sorbate, Potassium Cinnamate and Calium Disoduim Edta in it. But then, they clarify that this is to "protect taste".
Firstly, how does it protect taste? Or is that a secret. :o
Second, why do they write that on there?
Answers:
Most of the chemicals in it that are there to "protect taste" are not chemicals that you would normally want to ingest (in large quantities). So they write "to protect taste" so that you'll (hopefully) know that there isn't a dangerous amount in the can.
Extra Side Note - The order that the ingredient list is in, is the order of what is most in the can. (that's why water is normally the 1st ingredient, because it's mostly composed of water. And so on, and so on).
I have no idea, but i am looking at my soda right now and do not see that message. i do have the ingrediants, but apparently mine does not have taste protection.
Most probably it is kind of a preservative that keeps the taste as good as the day it was packed and since soda drinks stay in refrigerators and shelf for months, this is important to keep the flavor.
If citric acid is added to protect taste it is to keep the soda a little bit acid. The ingredients you mentioned have be used for years . They keep the acidity from changing and in general keep the additives dissolved and in solution.
