Is carbonation bad for you?!


Question:

Is carbonation bad for you?

I drink a lot of seltzer water. I thought it was a good choice since it has no calories, no sugar, no sodium etc... but then someone told me that too much carbonation is bad for you. Is that true? I couldn't find anything that says it is.


Answers:
I would not think so. I have problems with my stomach and the carbination helps.
I also make my soda with a product from Soda Club, where you can alter the amount of Co2.

i disagree. i drink alot of carbonated water too because i am suppose to cut back on soda. I know the carbonation in soda combined with the sugars in soda are bad for your teeth but carbonation alone is fine from what i understand.

With pop-rocks, yes it is.

well the gas from that may build up (no flatulence, just burps)

but every drinks coke, pepsi, sprite, mountain dew, dr pepper, etc!

Contains a very mild acid (carbonic acid).. pretty harmless. Make you burp, maybe!

me too! i love selzer water, i drink it everyday at school and work. i hope its not bad for yu.

The Carbonation process causes carbon atoms to bond with the oxygen in water.
This essentially means that it doesn't hydrate as well (if it all), and serves as a poor substitute for drinking water.

I have had several red bull's a day for so many years I've lost track. If carbonation was bad for you I would have been dead years ago.

The gas in the seltzer water or soda makes your stomache swell and can make your stomache lining in time grow. This results in a larger capacity for food intake. In time you won't get full on the same amount of food that you normally would. That is the explanation that was explained to me by a nutritionist. Granted this is the case when you drink to excess. Natural water is always the best.

Yeah... it stinks. The carbonation in all soft drinks causes calcium loss in the bones.

The person who told you that was probably thinking of the myth that carbon dioxide (which is what carbonation is) will build up in your blood if you drink too many carbonated beverages. This is not true, though. Neither is it true that drinking carbonated beverages will cause you to inhale too much carbon dioxide and asphyxiate.

In the first case, carbon dioxide is only harmful because it can asphyxiate or suffocate when inhaled in large quantities (like during a volcanic eruption). You don't need to worry about asphyxiating your stomach! The gas will either pass out either end like it usually does, or be absorbed into your blood where the complicated process that keeps your blood normal will bring it to your lungs to be exhaled.
In the second case, carbon dioxide is naturally present in the air we breathe, so you need not worry about breathing in too much, because when mixed with oxygen, it's harmless.
In short, drinking a lot of seltzer water all at once isn't going to suffocate you, and the carbon dioxide will not compound over time because of the ways your body regulates itself naturally.
I wouldn't worry about it!
