Tea room virgin?!

Question:

Tea room virgin?

I would like to visit a local tea room. I live about an hour west of Philadelphia, and I've found information on several different tea rooms in my area, but I'm not sure what to expect when I go. How formal are tea room generally? Is there anything specific I need to know before I go?

Answers:
You usually need to call and make reservations 24 hours in advance. I'd suggest calling and booking an "Afternoon Tea."

Other than calling ahead, good manners are all that you need. Napkin in the lap (will most likely be cloth), in your chair if you get up from the table and will be returning... the usual.

Oh, and don't be afraid to ask for more hot water if your teapot (they bring each gues their own pot) is cooling off or getting too strong from the loose tea inside. They expect to do this, but are often not sure when you need it.

Have fun! Be sure to take a friend so you can talk and compare notes while having tea. Try new teas, new flavor sandwiches, and new scones. You will have a blast!

Tea rooms are as individual as the proprietors who run them.

Some are fancy, authentic "teas" (complete with scones and clotted cream, jellies and jams) held by Brittish enthusiasts.

Some are fun-loving gaming rooms.

Some are inhabited by sweet, elderly ladies who all know each other and meet their daily for tea while others cater to tourists and the dining room may never see the same group twice.

You should really google (or check a local restaraunt review website) for one that suits your tastes.
