When people say New Orelans is "chocolate" whats that mean?!

Question:

When people say New Orelans is "chocolate" whats that mean?

Answers:
When Mayor Nagin was talking about rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina he made reference to the city being chocolate. His rather off the cuff comment was about the racial makeup of the city.

Here is a link to some news about it.

its like a terrys chochlate orange (lush)

They are referring to the ethnic makeup of the community.

The population and culture - dark, sweet and rich (like a chicory coffee too)

as a native new orleanian the term means that we pretty much have more black people then white people basically. when our mayor said the comment about have a chocolate city he actually meant have more black then white pop. to me i dont think this really depicts new orleans for what it worth. as a creole woman i love that im multi cultral and there r many people in the city who r but the truth of the matter is that it is mostly black like it or not... or at least pre-katrina. i live in new orleans right now and my neighbor which was mostly black has been brought out by white people and really im the only color person of my street... which seem weird but true.

Nawlins has a rich cultural heritage. African, French, Spanish, native American make up aspects of the unique culture of south Lousiana. Dark coffee, dark dealings from the past, hoodoo, voodoo, chickory coffee as just to mention a few.

mostly of black ppl
