Cocaine in coca-cola?!

Question:

Cocaine in coca-cola?

im doing a school health assignment on cocaine and i have read lots of info about there once being cocaine in coca-cola but some sources have informed me that there is no cocaine in it any more while other have told me there is still a very small amount of cocaine in it and other sources have told me that the coca leaf is still used in it but the cocaine has been extraced and not added to the coca-cola drink. which of these are true? or does no one really know and its like a secret to the public or something??

Answers:
The original formula of Coca-Cola and the earlier revisions of the formula contained trace amounts of cocaine because one of its key ingredients was coca leaves. For most of the 20th century and now in the 21st century, the revised formula has been using decocainized cola leaves.

You could read more about this in " For God, Country & Coca-Cola: The Definitive History of the Great American Soft Drink and the Company that Makes It" by Mark Pendergrast.

It's a great source for your report as well as for anyone who is interested in getting more details about the world's largest soft drink company.

To awnser your question yes there once was cocaine in coke but there is no longer any, But that would explain the adiction i have to it ummm...

Coca-Cola did once contain an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass but after 1904 Coca-Cola started using, instead of fresh leaves, "spent" leaves - the leftovers of the cocaine-extraction process with cocaine trace levels left over at a molecular level. However, as cocaine is one of numerous alkaloids present in the coca leaf, it was nevertheless present in the drink. Today, the flavoring is still done with kola nuts and the "spent" coca leaf. In the United States, there is only one plant (in New Jersey) authorized by the Federal Government to grow the coca plant for Coca-Cola syrup manufacture

well there used to be, but there is not anymore... i've read about it several places, but this is the only one I could remember. Try this and it might lead to other sources!

I can still recall when I was in high school I made a report about coca-cola. It is made from coca leaves and cola nuts. Mentioning cocaine I don`t think the makers of this drink would do that it would be bad for the market and becomes HAZARDOUS to one`s health.
