Is it dangerous to put hot drinks in plastic water bottles?!

Question:

Is it dangerous to put hot drinks in plastic water bottles?

I like to make ice tea and to store it in 1.5L plastic water bottles. Is it safe to drink the tea if I put it in the bottle while the tea is still hot? Also, can I make sun tea in bottled water bottles?

Answers:
Nope, I think my mom saw somewhere that it's bad to re-use the bottles, and if you do, you have to wash them out with soap like regular dirty dishes..

I drink tea like that, just gotta make sure its not hot enough to melt the bottle. If the sun can get into the water bottle I bet that would be an easy way, essentially, the sun heats the water up a little to steep the tea anyways.

A study has been recently conducted in Aust. showing that as long as the bottle has no contaminents beforehand, there is no problem with this type of stuff, and that all impurities have been manufactured out of the plastics before they reach the consumer.

Ok.. I read somewhere I dnt remember, the bottled water bottles is not good, The plastic is a bad quality & it releases some chemicals in the long run & also if u might have noticed. It smells weird after some use.

dnt pour hot liquids in pla.. bottle, as they crumble when hot liq.. poured, also its harmful, as it releases some toxicns when hot poured... Hope this helps!!

yea it is dangerous and yes. honey you can make sun tea in any kinda bottle. be careful, if the tea is hot enough when you put it in the bottle it will melt it. good luck

well the reason you don't put hot liquids in a plastic bottle is because the bottle can melt/break resulting in a very big mess or even dangerous burns!

let it cool before pouring into a plastic bottle.

make sun tea in a glass pitcher instead.

There are many studies that support both sides of this argument so to be safe, I would "not" continue this practice until the dust settles.

Get a stainless steel Thermos if you are concerned.

yes

yes, if the drink is too hot, like boiling, it will melt the bottle

depends on how hot it could melt part of the plastic into your drink and give you food poisoning

I did that once, burned almost all the way through the bottle, and burned. Hurt reaaaally bad. I'd use iced tea.

I just read a report that said heating up plastics with heated drinks, or microwaves releases toxins into the food/drink which is touching the plastic. Sounds scary. I wouldn't do it.

Let it cool off at an appropriate temperature, then you can put it in-it is okay to put the tea in the bottle when it's hot, but it might melt the plastic.

no as long as its not to hot it will burn.

Would melt it

Depends how warm it is. if it is really warm, the plastic starts to melt/mend.

no

I'd be alittle concerned that the plastic in the bottles (which seems to be getting thinner & cheaper ALL the time...) might leach into the drink & end up clogging up YOU. I know clear glass has its drawbacks- but polyethylene poisoning isn't one of them. If you like your drinks without any "extra-added ingredients"- I'd store them in glass. :)

I do that all the time, so your going to be fine as long as the hot sun does not melt it. So I suggest staying inside with it.

I don't know about dangerous, but it certainly is IMPRACTICAL! The one time I tried it, it softened the plastic just enough to warp it out of shape to where the bottom was no longer flat and the bottle would not stand up any more.

no but it could melt it

FIRST YEA IT IS DANGEROUS. LET IT COOL FIRST. AND SECOND, WHEN I WAS WATCHING RACHEAL RAY YESTERDAY SHE HAD THE ACCIDENTAL HOUSEWIFE ON HER SHOW AND SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT NASTY BACTERIA LIVE IN. AND ONE OF THE THINGS WERE RE USING WATER BOTTLES. SHE SAID EVEN IF YOU WASH IT, ITS STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

i wouldent put hot tea in the bottles but you can make sun tea in the bottles. do not reuse the bottles tomany times b/c the bottle releases toxins after washing it so many times

no

I've heard that you shouldn't put EXTREMELY hot drinks into plastic bottle...it also depends on the type of plastic...such as, if it wasn't a very good quality of plastic. anonymous

yes it is dangerous the bottle will start to melt

you shouldn't put hot drinks in plastic bottles, for the plastic may shrink in size & plus loss some of it's oil (this is petrochemical oil people!!)

well i'm just answering your question, rather put hot drinks in so called 'coffee jugs', as the heat stays inside & it isen't a poisones object.

peace

sure

This is going to sound weird but I think plastic releases something because whenever I make tea there's always something better about putting it in a plastic cup. First off all I noticed it would bubble a lot more. It even makes a small noise while bubbling. But I can always taste the difference. The plastic makes it taste better for some people (it also depends on the tea). Some bottles have a better quality than others. So of course studies are going to come out different. It only proves that there is some variable (probably quality of course) that changes everything and has yet to be officially proven that it exists. So I always say better safe then sorry. Brain cells or plastic?
Hard choice, I know (kidding).

no.. but make sure its so hot that it can melt the bottle.

Like everyone else said, it could melt the plastic bottle. If you choose to use plastic bottles, only reuse them twice.

If you want something even safer, yet still portable, try glass bottles. I have a friend who drinks Snapple religiously and saves all the bottles for me. I wash them, and then boil them on the stove in distilled drinking water and reuse them. I still only use them for up to 5 uses, but my friend drinks so much Snapple, I don't see how I will ever run out of those bottles!

(FYI, if you use glass bottles with metal caps, be sure to boil the caps too. ;) )
