Depends upon where you get it and what the source is i.e. tap, pitcher or can/bottle. I know for a fact that local water has a lot to do with the taste of Coke & Root Beer - and I think they adjust the flavoring to meet local tastes as well but I'm not sure.
Tap sodas usually mix up their formulation as the syrup is separated from the carbonated water; pitchers of course lose their fizz and you're left with a flat drink; bottles/cans are the best source for me.
Personally I prefer root-beer though I'm a Coke drinker. I prefer the flavor, but the level of carbon-dioxide in Rootbeer is a tad bit too high for my taste.
Also Coke is easier to find than Rootbeer here in the Philippines

Coke. Root beer dosen't taste that good. But maybe it's because i dont get to drink root beer often here in Hong Kong. But Coke rocks!
