What is the best coffee to buy and why?

8 O'Clock in the Morning Coffee. Why? It was the A&P brand for many years. As we all know the A&P grocier has almost went outta business. Yet one can find them in Mississippi & Louisana. I know not where you live but you can find 8 O'Clock in the Morning Coffee at Kroger's grocier all over the SouthEast of America. It has been on the US Market since 1859. That's Pre-Civil War. So soldiers from both sides were probably drinking it. Not to mention that soldiers of probably every war since have been drinking 8 O'Clock in the Morning Coffee. It's basically a American tradition. Maxwell House is pretty arcadic also being established in 1897. I would go with whole bean & grind the beans at home with a grinder they come pretty cheap now-a-days at $20 for a small one. You will have to taste different blends to see what your palate appauldes. I personally like plain ole' regular blend or breakfast blend.
Guatamalan Elephant coffee beans... can be brought from Whittards of Chelsea (UK)... best coffee I've ever had.
i really like the starbucks breakfast blend. its a mild coffee that wakes me up in the morning but doesnt have the bitter punch that darker roasts have. its smooth and light tasting.
Dunkin donuts whole beans.
Any organic sumatra is nice too, but I drink coffee with breakfast, which usually involves sweet stuff. Dunkin donuts coffee is formulated to go perfectly with sweet stuff.

I like Cafe Altura's Classic Roast from Whole Foods. it has a nice light flavor that isn't overpowering and hits the spot!
I love Sumatra. I drink mine with condensed milk. This coffee and the smoothness/sweetness of condesed milk is just AWESOME!! Very soothing and a great dessert drink. A friend of mine who is a Starbucks afficianado actually likes my sumatra concoction.
Plain ol Folgers. Mild, non bitter, pleasant taste. About 2 pots a day!

The best coffee is bought green (unroasted) then roasted at home. When you roast your own coffee you can do things like blend the roast vertically, that is mix two different batches of the same beans roasted to two different levels. Or you can come up with new blends that give the unique flavor profile that you want. I buy my beans from http://sweetmarias.com they have excellent advice on how to roast your own coffee and a huge selection of high-quality beans.
My particular favorite bean is Kenyan, I'm not very particular about which plantation they come from. Monsooned Malabar is also amazing, as is sulawesi kalossi.
