Why do they put ozone in some bottled water? Is it safe?
I looked at the ingredients on my water bottle and I saw that ozone is one of the ingredients. Why do they put ozone in bottled water? Is this safe or should we switch to a different brand?
Answers:
The ozone treatment of your water is a good thing -- don't bother to switch brands for that reason.
As mentioned above, ozone is used instead of chlorine for killing bacteria in bottled water. Many municipal drinking water systems do this as well. This practice does NOT deplete the ozone layer as suggest by the previous answer.
(Note: Adding oxygen to bottled water is NOT the same thing as using ozone to purity water. Adding O-2 to water may or may not have any benefit).
Ozone (O-3) is much less stable than regular oxygen molecules (O-2). Therefore, any low levels of ozone (that is not in the ozone layer) should eventually dissipate to become regular oxygen -- 2 molecules of O-3 yield 3 molecules of O-2.
The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere protects us from the higher frequencies of UV light, the most dangerous UV. On the other hand, HIGH levels of ground-level (lower atmoshpere) ozone is considered to be an air pollutant. However, LOW levels of ozone can be used to purify air in a room in addition to being used to purify water.
Note that ozone does NOT remain in your water after treatment -- so there should be no health hazard from drinking municipal water or bottled water that has been treated in this manner. In fact, it should be healthier since the bacteria has been removed.

i've never heard of this before. ozone as in the ozone layer????????
Ozonating water kills bacteria and other harmfull stuff. It is used instead of chlorine
ozone is oxygen-3, three atoms of oxygen, "ordinary" breathing oxygen is O2. Ozone is often used to kill bacteria since the extra oxygen atom is very reactive and will oxidize the bacteria.
well our ozone layers-are already diminishing-probably when thy bottle it.I'm sure the company is one of the sources, depleting
our ozone.(well it sounded good anyway)
Ozone is to clear odor... From my understanding is that, it is harmful if you breathe too much of it, not sure about drinking.
Some water are oxigenated or with oxygen added. It is basically a marketing gimmick. Yes it is safe. Here is a good article about a study on oxigenated waters: http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/waterst...
