Why does fizzy/carbonated water taste different to normal water?!

Question:

Why does fizzy/carbonated water taste different to normal water?

Ordinary flat water, straight from the tap is nice, and I drink it all the time. However, fizzy water is horrible. I assumed that it was something to with the bubbles, so I have made fizzy water unfizzy, by shaking/stirring etc. But it still tastes horrible, and if anything is worse. Why does fizzy water taste so different to normal water? Why isn't it just normal water with bubbles?

Answers:
Fizzy water is made by dissolving carbon dioxide in water. The fizz is due to the gas escaping the water. However, especially for cold water, a substantial amount carbon dioxide will still be dissolved in it. Carbon dioxide dissolved in water exists as carbonic acid giving the water a bitter sourish taste. I think when you drank fizzy water, what you tasted was the the carbonic acid remaining inside and the minerals that might have been originally present in the water.

You are tasting the CO2 that is inside.

The co2 that makes it fizz reacts with your taste buds..to you it is unpleasant..I like it..to each his own

because the fizzy water (soda water) is carbonated and has a bit of sugar in it, thats why you can use that water to make your own soft drink

It opens the taste buds on your tongue.
So you're tasting everything that's around.
And the CO2 yes.

carbonated water is made up of many other compounds. plus there's sugar, making it sweeter and more delectable.
so people def want more of sugary drinks as compared to plain ol' water just plain ol' h2o
