Is it a cherry? i thought it looked more like a bead. cherries and beads dont make sense. did they just think it looked cool?

Sadly (showing my age here) the dot has a name, and it is Spot (or The Spot, depending on what you read). They did a huge marketing campaign with Spot back in (I think) the early 90s.

Cool Spot was the mascot for 7-Up in the early 1990s which later made its way to the video games.
Ya the name is Cool Spot, and just in case you didn't know 7up refers to the original 7ounce cans they had sold the drink in.
