How come if you put soda in your eyes it burns?!

Question:

How come if you put soda in your eyes it burns?

i always wonder that

Answers:
The tingling in your mouth when you drink soda comes from protons released when carbonic anhydrase (an enzyme in your mouth) accelerates the formation of hydrogen ions from dissolved carbonic acid. Acidification of nerve endings creates the tingling feeling.

Though you do not have carbonic anhydrase in your eye, the same reaction occurs slower, and the hydrogen ions irritate the nerves in your eye, which are especially sensitive, since your eye prefers not to go blind... but you seem not to care about going blind, so you must be relatively insensitive to pain.

(and my own common sense)

Who cares why? The bigger question is why are you putting soda in your eye?

Why the F**K would you put soda in your eyes?????

y would anyone be stupid enough to try that anyway

Kind of an odd thing to try. It could be multiple ingredients in the soda, but I think the carbonic acid in the soda could burn the eyes. Try to avoid doing this in the future!

It probably has to do with the carbonation as well as the pH level of the soda which could cause irritation to your cornea. It is also not a recommended use for soda. It is generally put in your mouth and then swallowed as a refreshment.

at ICP concerts they spray soda on the audience and they use diet root beer cause it doesnt burn the eyes
