What is the best way to keep coffee fresh?
I know that opening coffee makes it more prone to getting sour...what can I do to keep my coffee fresher, longer?
Answers:
If you use whole beans, you can freeze 'em, and just take out as much as you need to grind for one pot at a time. Off-the-shelf ground coffee does so well in the fridge that I think there should be a "refrigerate after opening" statement on the label.
[Edit] Didn't realize Heinz already said as much until this posted. Great minds.
Some people keep it in their fridge in an air-tight container.
Directions on can ?
Unground in the freezer. Only take out enough for the cup(s) of coffee you want and grind it right before using it. You'll hardly recognize it, it'll taste that good.
~ According to a wonderful article at the National Coffee Association of U.S.A. (NCAUSA), Inc the best way to go is “airtight and cool”. Preserving the freshness of your coffee can be difficult. The freshness gets depleted very fast when it is subjected to excessive air, moisture, heat and light. So, you need to get your precious beans in airtight glass or ceramic containers. Once you have your coffee in the right container, put it in a cool, dark place. Remember, any place near the oven or a window will get quite warm, so try to avoid putting the container there.
Buy a FoodSaver and store it in one of the containers.
Store whole coffee beans in an airtight container and only grind what you need when you need it. Fresh-ground coffee has the best flavor.
Never put your coffee in the fridge or freezer! This will rob the flavor right out of the grounds. Coffee has to breathe so when you purchase your coffee make sure you buy the kind that have the vent on the bag allowing the coffee to give it's own gasses off.
Most of the good coffee roasters know this, that is why they use these bags. Just role the top of the bag down and put a chip clip on the top of the bag to seal it. and don't let it sit, Drink It!
I buy freshly ground coffee in small quantities so that it keeps it's freshly ground aroma, placed in a well sealed bag, which goes into an airtight container kept in the fridge, lasts me a fortnight without loss of flavour,I am the fussy sort so i should know.
Keep it in the freezer!
freeze it
