Why are there half spheres in the sides of plastic milk jugs?!

Question:

Why are there half spheres in the sides of plastic milk jugs?

I don't know about you all, but in the milk jugs that I buy there are either one or two half spheres (depending on the size of the jug) that are "built in" to the side of the jug. The spheres are about 2 inches in diameter with the plastic lump (the protruding part) on the inside of the jug. I just want to know their purpose
I have included two links to pictures of milk cartons with that sphere shape in their side.

well, i figure it has something to do with the fact that if the milk freezes, those dents give it room to expand, because the frozen milk will pop those out first before it pops the top off. i live in wisconsin and when we used to have a fridge in the garage (big family, we couldnt fit it all inside) in the winter the milk would freeze regularly, and those things would always pop out, but the top never popped off

Wow I have not noticed them or at least the ones around here don't have them. Interesting, my guess it is used as an indication of whether the milk container has been opened or not?

The only thing I can think, is to keep the bottles separate to give them more shelf life, that way they get colder because the air circulates around them, they can achieve the same training people not to place them together, but can you imagine to train all that people?....and the money?

I always thought it was so I'd have a well defined spot to glue on a decoration. Sometimes I'll attach a picture or maybe an old fashioned matchbox car. When the milk level gets low, I cut out the circle and put a toy snake so that it's slithering into the container.

Those milk jugs are non stop fun around here!

I don't know why someone gave Ashley D a thumbs down, because that's the right answer. So I gave Ashley a thumbs up to counter it.

It's to give room for expansion when the temp goes up and down, so the top won't pop off.

Also, if you notice, when milk goes bad, those sides pop out before the top pops off.
