Water--How much and how often should we drink?!

Question:

Water--How much and how often should we drink?

So, I always hear & read that we should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day...and i tried that but i'd drink 2 glasses at a time...and then within 2 hrs my body would get rid of it all....So, maybe we need to drink only a little bit a time? Like maybe a half glass every hour or something? That's kinda hard for me though...as I normally don't get thirsty and forget to drink. So to make up for it, i'd drink lots of it together.....which perhaps is just as good as NOT drinking...?

I'd really appreciate your educated thoughts/opinions....
Thanks in advance !

Answers:
First, if you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated. So ideally, you should be drinking periodically throughout the day to prevent that. Basically, thirst is the body's response to a deficiency of water. Also, you're supposed to have 64 oz, or about 2000 mL of water a day, regardless of how many glasses that comes out to be. And you're right, drinking too much at a time doesn't give it as much absorption as possible, so to spread it evenly would be ideal, but it's far more important to reach some semblance of the "quota" over the course of the day, so don't be too frustrated if you can't drink a half glass every half hour or something near impossible like that when you're busy all day.

drink half your weight if you weigh one hundred pounds drink 50 oz. divide it evenly over the first 8-10 hours of your day.

umm... i drink nothing but water. it feels super good. i drink like four to five water bottles a day. i dont know how, but just love water.

hydration is important, but all drinks contain water. limit the amount of sodas and coffee. dry lips and skin are a sign of dehydration. urine should be light yellow to clear -never dark. the "parched" feeling in the mouth is a good indicator of dehydration, too.

I found this on CNN from the Mayo Clinic:

A couple of approaches attempt to approximate water needs for the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate.

* Replacement approach. The average urine output for adults is 1.5 liters a day. You lose close to an additional liter of water a day through breathing, sweating and bowel movements. Food usually accounts for 20 percent of your total fluid intake, so if you consume 2 liters of water or other beverages a day (a little more than 8 cups) along with your normal diet, you will typically replace the lost fluids.

* Dietary recommendations. The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3.0 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day

I don't count it and I don't care. I just drink enough.

i heard that they changed it to six glasses.
i have the same problem though, i just forget to drink it or something like that.
i feel like i cant be drinking water ALL the time!

we should be drinking at least 2litres a day to kepp our body hydrated, so your right your body does get rid of it within 2hours but then by the time its out you will be drinking more so that in another 2 hrs it goes again

The right amount of water will vary depending on how warm it is and how active you are and what you've been eating, how big you are, etc. There's no specific amount that is always right. Make sure you get enough to function well but drinking more more water than you need does you no good at all.

I've personally heard we are supposed to drink HALF of our weight in ounces per day. If you way 200lbs you should drink 100 oz of water a day- that's like 12 cups of water. Check out the links below for more info.
