Is it true that you need boiling water for making tea, but not for coffee?

And if so, why?


Answers:
Yes, tea needs boiling water poured on it, but if you pour boiling water on coffee, it scalds it, and spoils the flavour. I get around this by putting the milk in the cup first (with instant coffee) then the water. Everyone compliments me on the taste of my coffee, so it must be ok.

You dont have to have boiling water for tea - could use cold water too. Dont know about coffee tho coz i dont like it or drink it

You shouldn't use boiling water for tea as it ruins the flavour depending on what type of tea you are drinking you should adjust the temperature of the water, for white teat the water needs to be around 60 degrees for green it's slightly higher at between 70 and 75 and for black tea it should be around 90.

It's actually the opposite. You can make great tasting tea by putting some tea bags in a jar and leaving it in the sun. . . hardly boiling. You can't do that with a coffee bean. You have to have boiling or near-boling water to force the oils out of the ground coffee beans

If you are using good loose leaf tea, the water should not be boiling.

Green tea should use water that is 165, then brewed for 3 minutes. This all depends on the type of loose leaf tea that you are using. Most people say they don't like green tea because it is brewed with boiling water for too long, which gives it a gunpowder taste.

Black tea should be brewed at 180 for 3-5.

Find a local loose leaf tea shop, they will give you optimal brewing times and temperatures for all of your teas.

The same will apply for coffee although I do not know as much about the different varieties. It has to do with the roasting process, and the heat degrading the oils from the coffee beans.

yes the boiling water burns the coffee and ruins the taste, however it breaks down the tea leaves and allows them to develop a better flavour. That is why you can't make a decent cup of tea up mount everest because the water boils at a lower temperature due to pressure changes.

In making tea, depending on what type of tea, the temperature range is from 70 to 96 degrees Celsius, most would require just of the boil, especially for tea we drink with milk.

If it is green tea, the temperature would be 70 to 80 degrees Celsius.

As a general rule, Use water just off the boil for tea, as boiling water will scald the tea and do not soak it too long, best between 2 to 3 minutes. Longer time will result in what we term as 'stewing' the eat and it will not taste nice.

As for coffee, there is the cold brewing method, leaving the coffee grounds to soak in cold water over night prior to use. Some places practices this method for their cold coffee drinks.
As for brewing coffee with hot water, also use water off the boil for its optimum flavor. The same reason for tea applies to this.

Even with coffee machines, the water used for brewing coffee is never at boiling point.

for ordinary black tea boiling water is essential to brew it but coffee does not need it because it is roasted and ground.
