Being an American, I would say to you that the majority of us drink some type of beverage while eating. After eating some may drink a variety of things ....soda, beer, wine or some kind of juice.....
soda
Some people drink coffee, some people drink dessert wine, some people drink black-tea,it depends on what native they are!!!
Probably beer.
In America, the idea of regular mealtime is disappearing. Most people 'grab a bite' now and again at no regular times, and often it's consumed while driving somewhere, at the workplace while getting things done, or in a rush.
If we have a formal meal in the morning, the breakfast is almost always accompanied by coffee and tea, often also by milk, orange juice, and less often grapefruit or tomato juice. There are some alcoholic breakfast drinks that are consumed on special occasions (or more often if there's a drinking problem): mimosa (equal parts orange juice and champagne) and bloody mary (vodka or gin, tomato juice, optional hot pepper sauce, over ice with a stalk of celery as a garnish).
At the noon or evening meal, a formal approach would include pre-dinner alcoholic drinks--which could be any variety of cocktail, wine or beer--or non-alcoholic sodas in some cases. The meal itself, in most formal settings, will include wine (which is supposed to be chosen by the host to match well with the flavors of the food) and water. The conclusion of the meal will include coffee or tea, and the more common after-dinner alcoholic drinks would include flavorful liqueurs like Amaretto, Sambuca, Kahlua, etc.--but just about any cocktail, beer, or wine could be served after dinner as well.
Again, that's just the formal pattern. There are many lower-class Americans who pop a can of beer open upon awakening and continue to consume one or more cans per hour all day long. Another wide segment of Americans will never consume alcohol. The nation is quite diverse.
When I have people over, I offer coffee after dinner. When I am home with my husband, we drink whatever we want to drink. Usually soda for him, water for me.
With a meal can be whatever, wine, water, soda, milk or juice. I prefer water or milk. Traditionally after meals it is coffee or tea.
