What is yerba mate?!

Question:

What is yerba mate?

Answers:
a recreational Argentine tea/drink stimulates your energy.
Be prepared for some insomnia.

A high-caffeine tea that's quite popular in Argentina. The traditional drink of gauchos, who would sip it through the hollow handle of a special silver mate spoon.

Some kind of energizing herbal tea that works like coffee wthout the jittery side effects. I hear it's great, I don't like how it tastes though.

Maté (pronounced as “Mah-tay”) is a popular beverage in South America. In several countries in South America, maté is considered a national drink. It is widely used as a tonic, diuretic, stimulant to reduce fatigue, and as an appetite suppressant.

Yerba Mate is a south amereican beverage that comes from the holly family. It is similar to a tea, in as much that you dry the leaves and steep them in hot water. With around a 90% household consumption rate in south america, its similar to coffee consumption here. Mate is loaded with close to 200 active ingrediants and has more antioxidants than green tea. Its also loaded with b vitamins, potassium, vitamin C, calcium, vit A, E, Niacin and flavanoids. It is not a high caffine drink as noted by previous posters, in fact has only about 1/3 of what a cup of coffee has. Also, it is unconfirmed but it is speculated it contains mateine, similar to caffiene but without the side affects. I can say from personal experience that this is going to be the next big thing. Its amazingly good for you, energizes you and helps you think better. It will even affect your mood. Oh and I run a Mate shipping dept and come home bouncing off the walls and have no problems falling asleep. You are alert and focused but not "wired", though there is a similar feeling. I work for Aviva Yerba Mate and we do have one of the most informative sites on the web as someone has already posted. Our Mate is different then traditional Mates because we have the sticks and sttems removed. Its 99.9% pure leaf. If you have someone elses Mate, look at it closely, how many sticks do you see? How powdery is it? Our Mate is smooth and never bitter like some varieties. If anyone has any other questions about Mate please refer to our website or contact me directly. Dont believe what people spout off, readup on it and make an informed decision.
