Why does my coffee get an oily film on top?!

Question:

Why does my coffee get an oily film on top?

i have just cleaned my coffee maker but it still is happening

Answers:
It is the scant amount of oil from the coffee bean. Nothing to worry about, there is no nutritional value or detriment to this.

maybe your mug is dirty.

It depends on the type of coffee you use. Is it roasted for a long time?
When you roast coffee, the oils come out from the beans. When mixed with water, the oil goes on the top.

The roasting make a hair of oil, if you are using non dairy creamer that may be the issue, they contain processed oils to create the thick feeling and sensation in your mouth.

Try cleaning your pot with vinegar.

There could be a build up of grease that water wont cut.

Actually, it does come from the coffee. Moreover it's a sign that your coffee is high-quality, properly roasted, and still quite fresh! It sure ain't Starbucks!

I'm going to guess that you're using a french press or a gold mesh filter or some other process that doesn't remove the oils. If you use paper filters, you probably won't notice it as much.

There was a little medical research that suggested that paper filters were useful for people on a low-fat diet compared to french pressing--but I don't think it was as important, say, as not smoking or avoiding trans-fats.

Enjoy :-)
